SPACESHIP EARTH

"We travel together, passengers on a little spaceship, dependent upon its vulnerable reserves of air and soil, all committed for our safety to its security and peace; preserved from annihilation only by the care, the work, and, I will say, the love we give our fragile craft. We cannot maintain it half fortunate, half miserable, half confident, half despairing, half slave to the ancient enemies of man, half free in a liberation of resources undreamed of until this day. No craft, no crew can travel safely with such vast contradictions. On their resolution depends the survival of us all."

Welcome to this special report for On the Brink Radio. Many thanks to Dr. Iain Kerr, CEO of Ocean Alliance, which I consider to be both pinnacle and paragon of genuine leading-edge oceanographic research organizations.

Iain and I got in touch in April of 2010 just as the BP Gulf disaster was unfolding. Iain and his research yacht Odyssey had just returned to the states from a 5+ year survey of global ocean toxicity based on studying sperm whales. Without a break they launched into a subsequent research program studying the effects of the oil spill on marine life in the Gulf, which I believe continues to this day.

Iain co-founded Ocean Alliance with Dr. Roger Payne, a well-known scientist and cellist who was the first to refer to humpback whale calls as 'songs', and the producer of the legendary lp 'Songs of the Humpback Whale' (which is what you are hearing behind the dialogue on this show, along with me on native American flute).

Their primary objectives have been to create awareness of global ocean toxicity as an emerging and primary threat to the health of all marine life with particular emphasis on cetaceans, to conduct leading-edge research to investigate this scenario, to educate the public about their findings and to inspire humanity as a whole to renavigate our course in order to protect life on Mother Earth, the only planet we know of who is so graced.

Our skype connection dropped out just as I was telling Iain about my new campaign to require the use of 'shrouds' on all boats with propellors; we will be recording part two soon, hopefully joined by Dr. Roger Payne and/or Patrick Stewart.
